How Picking a Type of Flooring is Like Picking a Movie to Watch

Remodeling your home and picking a type of flooring can be challenging. There are countless choices to be made, and each of those choices has positives and negatives. So how are you supposed to pick? One good way to choose a new floor is to make the decision like you’re trying to pick a movie. The same principles apply.

What do you think about when picking a movie? In other words, with so many choices, how do you narrow it down and find the right one for that perfect night on the couch? The first thing you do is consider what genre of movie you feel like watching. When picking a new floor, you have to make a similar choice.

Different types of flooring are like different genre’s of movies, because they all have their merits, but certain genre’s are better for certain situations. For example, if you go on a first date, you might want to see a romantic comedy. Now, say that date goes really well and you end up getting married, having kids, a dog, and a white picket fence; you need to find the appropriate type of flooring for that situation. Something rugged, like luxury vinyl plank, that can stand up to lots of abuse from running children and dogs’ paws, is the perfect fit. Just like Knocked Up is the perfect movie choice for a first date (just kidding. Seriously, don’t watch that movie on a first date).

Ok, say you’ve narrowed down your choices. You know you want to instal luxury vinyl plank. Now what? Go back to the movie analogy: after picking the genre, you narrow down your choice by considering things like actors or directors that you like. Again, the same thing applies to flooring. Think about colors that accentuate the environment you live in. Do you live in the Pacific North-West? If so, you might want to consider earthy tones. If you live in a home with lots of natural light, you might want to consider wide, handscraped natural finished planks.

Finally, how do you make a final decision. We’ve all been there before, scrolling through netflix, desperately trying to make that right choice. What are you going to watch? The underrated classic and courtroom drama Breaker Morant? Or Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole’s masterpiece, Becket? At some point, you just have to pull the trigger and live with your decision. (But seriously, watch Becket. Please watch Becket. For the love of god, please watch Becket and email me so we can talk about it)

The same thing applies to flooring. At the end of the day, there are going to be lots of good options. You just need to choose one. I promise you’ll like it once you live with it. Don’t second guess yourself, you made the right choice. One final thought, don’t make an obviously wrong flooring choice. Happening to like a certain type of flooring doesn’t necessarily make it the right fit for your situation. For example, if you’re on that first date, maybe don’t watch Silence of the Lambs in a dark room with someone you’ve just met (save that movie for the second date).

Basically, in conclusion, you just need to take it one step at a time. Slowly make a decision by making a bunch of smaller decisions. All of a sudden, you realize that you’ve actually made a big decision, and you’ve found the perfect movie to watch. And that’s how picking a type of flooring is like picking a movie to watch.
